Home to a young Anne Boleyn, Hever Castle was built in the 13th century as a country house and is now open for public viewing. It is located in the village of Hever, Kent. The castle will transport you back to the Tudor era with its 16th century portraits, furniture and tapestries. You can even view the signature of Anne Boleyn herself in the incredible Books of Hours. Alternatively, travel even further back in time in the 13th century gatehouse, which displays armour, instruments of execution and historic swords.
If you’ve overwhelmed by the 13th century’s severe disciplinary methods, step into the tranquil gardens for some respite. Wonder at the magnificent sculptures featured in the Italian garden, stroll down Anne Boleyn’s Walk to see century-old trees, or embark upon the beautiful hour-long walk around the lake, passing waterfalls and wartime pillboxes on your way. Your kids will love getting lost in the Yew and Water Mazes. Occasional special events make Hever Castle even more of a unique and incredible day out.
