The State Rooms Buckingham Palace

KidRated’s Buckingham Palace Top Tips:

  • Staterooms are only open when the Queen goes off on holiday in summer.
  • Bags are security scanned so leave non-airport-friendly items at home.
  • Desperate to go in winter? The Queen’s Gallery is open permanently.

As the official London royal residence since 1837, Buckingham Palace is one of London’s most famous attractions. Official events and receptions are often held there by the Queen as this popular palace receives around 50,000 visitors a year!

The majority of Buckingham Palace’s original 19th-century interior designs have survived to the present day within its 775 rooms and the palace is lavishly furnished with priceless works of art, furniture, as well as its palace garden (the largest private garden in London!).

The rooms are open to the public each year and visitors can learn about the varying functions of each room, such as the Throne Room where the Queen receives loyal addresses, or the Music Room where she meets her guests. At the end of your visit, you can relax in the West Terrace’s Garden Café, which serves a range of refreshments and hot beverages.

A variety of guided visits are available, from the State Rooms and Garden Highlights Tour to the Audio Tours available in a range of languages. If you like Buckingham Palace, be sure to check out Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle as well!

Booking Advice:

  • There’s a family multimedia guide which helps kids slow down otherwise they dash through each room and you don’t see anything. Take the same guide and you can look at the same things.
  • At the end of the tour when you reach the garden terrace, there’s a Family Pavilion with lots of activities for kids including big puzzles, dressing up and colouring. It’s free to go in and you can stay as long as you like.
  • The toilets are in the garden next to the shop. After buying some souvenirs pick up a Garden Trail so you can continue spotting things along the route to the exit.
  • Pushchairs aren’t allowed in the State Rooms so you have to leave them after the security scanning and can collect
    them at the garden terrace.
  • The exit is on a busy main road (Grosvenor Place). Turn right for Hyde Park Corner tube or left to go to Victoria.
