The Science Museum is the place to go for an educational day out that’s so much fun kids won’t realise how much they’ve learnt. With captivating interactive galleries, exhibitions, simulators and even an IMAX 3D Theatre, science will never get boring! There are always plenty of changing exhibitions, so check in advance to see what’s on.
Wonderlab is the perfect playground for budding scientists! Here, kids can delve into real scientific phenomena: order up a live experiment at the Chemistry Bar, witness a lightning strike up close, or journey through the solar system under a ceiling of stars. Wonderlab takes science from “what’s that?” to “wow!”
For younger kids, a visit to the Pattern Pod, a multi-sensory area for children under 8, is a must. Full of interactive exhibits that encourage children to recognise and copy, they can explore water ripples without getting their feet wet. Or create symmetrical images on touch screens, follow robot trails and much more.
Older kids will love Technicians: the David Sainsbury Gallery, where they can explore the world of careers. From film sets to pharmaceutical labs, kids can try out what it’s like to be a technician in some of the coolest behind-the-scenes jobs.
For a truly unforgettable experience, check out Astronights – the museum’s epic sleepover program for kids aged 7–11. Spend a night at the museum filled with exciting activities and see the exhibits like never before!
If you’re exploring with little ones, grab one of the museum’s family-friendly trails. Whether you’re hunting down space exhibits or exploring their top galleries, there’s plenty to keep everyone captivated.
A Beautiful Planet is one of a range of 3D films on offer at the museum’s IMAX Theatre. This exciting film allows you and your children to experience Earth like never before in a breath-taking portrait of the planet, captured from the international space station. IMAX tickets cost £12 for adults and £10 for concessions. Family discounts are available.
I love the science museum! I hadn’t been for a few years since I was younger but going back as a teen, it didn’t disappoint. Of course there were sections that were very much tailored to kids but I enjoyed them all the same. The thing I liked most about going now that I’m older is that I actually somewhat understood the things I read and saw. This a great museum for the whole family including teens so definitely give it a go.

Both my 4 year old and 8 year old enjoyed their visit to the Science Museum. There is an area in the basement that has interactive exhibits which my 4 year old enjoyed. Highly recommend!
