Victoria and Albert Museum

Victoria and Albert Museum Top Tips:

  • Take a moment to plan your trip with a museum map
  • Kids love the fountains in the John Madejski Garden
  • Combine it with a visit to the Natural History Museum or the Science Museum – they are just around the corner

Housing a collection spanning 5,000 years of art history, the Victoria and Albert Museum is the largest museum of decorative arts and design in the world.

It is located in the ‘Albertopolis’ area of cultural works associated with Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. The Victoria and Albert Museum was founded in 1852 and was named after the royal couple.

It hosts trends from the present day all the way back to a piece of Egyptian twill from 684-750 AD, so whether you follow the latest styles or keep it old-school, the V&A will have something to inspire your wardrobe!

The museum also displays intricately-designed architecture, books, furniture and much more to wonder at. Fancy-dress fans will love dressing up as Grimaldi the clown or an elegant Victorian.

A range of Family Art Fun trails are also available from the Learning Centre to guide and entertain you as you explore the development of art and design across the ages.

Special events take place occasionally, including activities especially for families!

  • The V&A puts on lots of family activities in the school holidays and most are free.
  • The free-to-borrow activity backpacks are definitely recommended. I was worried when we took a backpack to the glass gallery – not the first place I’d think to take kids! – but it was fab and gave us a reason to see parts of the museum we normally avoid.
  • Go to the Learning Centre Reception and just ask for suggestions on what to see. I’ve found them really welcoming and great at talking to children.
  • Teenagers will appreciate the special exhibitions and there are family tickets available.
