Oscar-winning actor, Morgan Freeman has been given the Freedom of the City award by The City of London, in a traditional ceremony held on Wednesday.
The award, the origins of which date back to the 13th century, allows Freeman to carry out his trade and, In days gone by, freemen were allowed to herd sheep over London Bridge, (a privilege that, oddly, no longer applies).
Freeman was honored for his charitable works, and of course for his acting. The 77 year old star of The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy and Unforgiven is famed for his gravelly voice, which he used to full effect, to read the Declaration of a Freeman in the ceremony at London’s Guildhall.
Other stars who have received the same honour include Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Joan Collins, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Bob Geldof.
