English footie fans are paying almost four times as much as their counterparts in Germany. That’s the jaw-dropping revelation from BBC Sport’s annual Price of Football study which is published today.
The average price of a Premier League season ticket is now a staggering £508 whereas the average price of a season ticket in Germany’s top division, the Bundesliga, is just £138
This means the price of English football has risen at almost twice the rate of everyday expenditure since 2011 and prices have rocketed by three times the rate of inflation during the last year.
Surprisingly, while the biggest explosion in finances, wages and transfer fees has been in the Premier League, the rate of ticket price increases is far higher in the lower leagues.
In the top flight the annual price hike is a still hefty 15.8%. But it is an eye-watering 31.7% in League One and a sizeable 19% in League Two.
Arsenal have the most expensive matchday ticket in the Premier League at £97 – and that is after a cut of £29 from their most expensive ticket last year at £126.
Chelsea’s cheapest match day ticket is £50 – highest-priced of the Premier League’s cheapest.
Championship outfits Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday’s have a limited number of £10 match day tickets, the cheapest in the top four leagues in England.
