Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” first premiered in 1984 and quickly became a massive hit, running for over 7,400 performances in London’s West End.
Its popularity extends to Germany, where it has been continuously performed in a custom-built theatre in Bochum since 1988, holding the Guinness World Record for most visitors to a single theatre.
Now Lord Lloyd Webber has replicated the German model and for his hit musical’s revival, transferred it to The Troubadour – a custom built theatre in Wembley.
Set in a magical world where trains come to life on stage, the story follows Rusty, a young steam engine, and his quest to win a championship race and win the heart of Pearl, a first-class carriage.
The staging is nothing short of spectacular with a stage that transforms into a dynamic racetrack, complete with ramps and tracks that allow the cast to race and perform breathtaking stunts on roller skates.
Renowned for its cutting-edge special effects, the use of lights, sound, and projections create a really immersive experience, making the races feel thrilling with audiences inches away from the action. Also, the choreography on roller skates is a visual feast, combining speed, agility, and artistry.
Finally, with an energetic mix of rock, pop, and disco – memorable tracks include “Starlight Express,” “Light at the End of the Tunnel,” and “U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.” all of which will become instant ear worms, driving the story forward and keeping the audience engaged.
A hugely entertaining show for kids — big and small. The plot is simple but the brilliant costume design, pyro, video effects and the theatre split into sections around the race track are not. For the parents, it’s all very 80’s, with a very modern twist. The girls absolutely loved it and roller-skated home, and sang “My Starlight Express, please answer me yes’… at the top of their voices for days afterwards.
For noise sensitive kids consider taking ear protectors — it is really loud, because of the set design. And for hungry kids, there’s a couple of bars with great drink choices but they’re really light on snacks, so eat first at the Box Park opposite (or bring favorites with you). A summer must see!
