Less than 10 miles from central London, the Welsh Harp Reservoir is a hundred and seventy-hectare area of open water, grassland, trees and marshes. It is a designated ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ as it provides precious habitats for local wildlife. Notably, it has a large population of rare, breeding water birds. The Welsh Harp Conservation Group helps maintain sections of the area, such as two bird hides. It also spreads environmental awareness through the Welsh Harp Environmental Education Centre.

The reservoir and its overgrown surroundings are the perfect place to escape the city for a few hours. There is a large open space by the reservoir, perfect for picnics on sunny days. On the southern side of the reservoir, kids can also run around in Neasden Recreation Ground’s sports ground and play area. And be sure to look out for budding plants and wildlife when visiting the reservoir itself – from spring’s tadpoles to late summer’s plums and blackberries, the reservoir is teeming with life whatever season you choose to visit.
