A former Cattery at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has been granted Grade II Listed status. Whittington Lodge had not been used as a cattery since 2010 when the cats were re-homed to a state of the art new cattery. The building was designed by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis at the beginning of the 20th Century and named after Dick Whittington, the legendary Lord Mayor of London and cat owner.
A 7 week old kitten has also been called Whittington to celebrate the listed status.
According to the chief executive of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Claire Horton, Whittington Lodge may well have been the first ever cattery in the UK. In its first year as a cattery it provided care for nearly 800 cats.
