121 hectares of green wonder, Kew Gardens is a botanical research and educational centre with the world’s largest collection of living plants at over 30,000 species.

As well as the Kew Gardens and greenhouses, you can visit Kew Palace or the 10 octagonal storeys of the Chinese-Ta themed Great Pagoda. The 18-metre high Treetop Walkway brings a unique view of a wide variety of birds, insects and other life in the treetops. A personal recommendation would be to visit the Palm House whilst it’s snowing here in London – it’s quite magical to step in from the snow into a tropical indoor jungle!

Activities for kids range from the enlarged badger sett to the marine aquarium. The Treehouse Towers playground teaches kids about trees whilst they play on giant swings, slides and zip wires. The Climbers and Creepers play area is an interactive zone where children can climb in plants, trap model flies with Venus flytraps or even get devoured by a pitcher plant! Kew Gardens is a great day out with something for all the family to enjoy.

How to get there:

Kew Gardens are situated next to the River Thames, 10 miles west of central London. Parking in the area is very limited. The nearest train station to Kew Gardens is Kew Gardens Rail station which can be reached from Richmond, however often, Kew Bridge Rail Station is more convenient with a direct service from London Waterloo. From Kew Bridge station it is a 10-minute walk to Kew Gardens.

I love Kew Gardens. There’s always new aspects of it to explore each time I come here. My favourite bit has to be the big palm house though. It’s like stepping into a tropical getaway in the middle of London. I went once in the winter and it was snowing outside so everything inside was extra steamy. It felt so cool to come in from the snow and suddenly be in this beautiful, lush paradise.

While there’s now a small admission fee for kids it is free for all to visit Kew Palace with a ticket to the gardens.
Bring a picnic. Sure, the food costs a bit more here but more because picnics are fun and you can sit on the grass together. If you can’t face making a packed lunch there’s a Tesco by Kew Gardens tube station.
If you want to get tea and cakes in the afternoon, go to the Pavilion Restaurant as it’s usually the least busy.
Don’t go straight to Climbers & Creepers or the kids won’t let you see anything else.
The Treetop Walkway is worth seeing and is close to Climbers & Creepers. Be warned, if it’s a bit windy you can feel a bit ‘seasick’ up there but kids will like the facts to read along the route.
